Calories and Weight Loss

We all know that calories and weight loss are linked.  Calories have such a negative association but the truth about calories is we need them to survive.  Your heart beat, breathing, thinking and digesting all depend on calories.

Calories are basically just the amount of energy in foods.  Some foods have more and some less.  The more calories the more energy derived from that food.  Calories needed are based on body size, age and whether an individual is male or female.  So the fact is calories are not the culprit in being overweight.  It’s your choices of food that mean you intake is more than what you’re burning.  That’s it in a nutshell.  If you’re trying to lose weight then you have to cut down on calories and exercise more.  Eat less and burn more.  It’s really quite simple.

Calories and weight loss isn’t difficult to understand but what foods you choose to eat and whether you decide to get off the couch are the choices that you must make.  Exercise is great for burning calories but it also has a long term advantage.  When you’re done exercising, your body continues metabolizing calories.  This is the huge plus of regular exercise.  The more exercise, the more you can eat, within limits of course.

The truth about calories is that everyone’s daily needs are different.  The best way to know if you are burning more than your taking in is the results of what you see on the scales.  If you’re gaining weight, you need to take in less calories and or burn more.  Calories and weight loss go hand in hand but look at calories in a neutral way and stay positive about your ability to control you weight, lose weight or maintain weight.
