Eat Good Carbs

In order to eat good carbs you need to know what they are.  Simple carbs are sugars.  White bread, candy, sodas all fit into the simple carb family.  When you ingest them, they break down almost instantly into glucose in your body.  This doesn’t sound like an effective weight loss program.

The type of carbs that we refer to as good carbs are complex rather than simple.  They digest slowly.  Examples are fruits, most veggies and whole grain, unprocessed flour used in  bread or pastas.

A soda and an apple are close in calories but which will satisfy your hunger?  The apple and it takes more time to eat it and it digests slower.  Apples qualify as fiber which will take care of hunger pangs and you’ll find you need to eat less and concentrate on other things.

It’s healthy to eat good carbs.  Besides weight loss, you are getting vitamins, minerals and many other other nutritional positives that you certainly aren’t going to get with chips and sodas.

It’s hard to read the labels and know what is acceptable.  Consumers are getting wiser but can still be mislead.  Don’t buy a “whole grain” bread with the first ingredient saying enriched on the label.  You want to see “whole” and not enriched.
